OT (Operational Technology) / SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) Commissioning Engineer Job Opportunity

Sector: Electricity Transmission & Grid Infrastructure

Location: Arnhem, Netherlands (Hybrid/remote working)

Employment Type: Contract

Duration: 12 months

Start Date: ASAP

Role Overview

A major European electricity transmission organisation is strengthening its internal engineering capability to support the continued development and increasing complexity of its high-voltage electricity network.

As an OT (Operational Technology) / SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) Commissioning Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the commissioning and integration of transmission assets with the operational applications and control systems used to monitor and operate the network.

The position sits at the interface between electrical infrastructure, telecommunications, OT (Operational Technology), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and field commissioning.

The primary responsibility is therefore not the physical commissioning of individual electrical assets, but ensuring those assets successfully communicate and integrate with the wider operational environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Commission interfaces between high-voltage transmission assets and OT (Operational Technology) / SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
  • Support commissioning activities across substations and wider transmission infrastructure.
  • Verify communication between field equipment and operational applications.
  • Perform functional testing of monitoring, control and communications interfaces.
  • Work closely with field commissioning engineers, OT (Operational Technology) specialists and telecommunications teams.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot commissioning and integration issues.
  • Provide technical support during commissioning activities.
  • Attend operational or project sites where additional troubleshooting is required.
  • Support the integration of new and modified assets into the operational transmission environment.
  • Contribute to the development of internal commissioning knowledge, processes and technical capability.

Requirements:

  • Degree or equivalent technical background in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience within electricity transmission, substations, utilities or complex electrical infrastructure.
  • Understanding of OT (Operational Technology) environments.
  • Experience with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
  • Knowledge of relevant IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standards.
  • Understanding of telecommunications and communications systems used within electrical infrastructure.
  • Experience with interfaces between field equipment and operational applications.
  • Commissioning, integration, testing or troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with HVDC (High-Voltage Direct Current) transmission systems would be advantageous but is not mandatory.
  • No single communications protocol is considered essential; broader understanding of communications and system integration is more important.
  • Experience working for Transmission System Operators (TSOs), Electricity utilities, Grid operators, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Electrical equipment manufacturers, Engineering consultancies, Substation engineering organisations or Transmission infrastructure businesses.
  • Strong electrical engineers with transferable commissioning, controls, communications or system-integration knowledge will also be considered.
  • Candidates already based internationally can be considered but must be willing to physically relocate to the Netherlands (full-time remote working from another country is not suitable due to operational and system-access requirements).
  • Travel requirements are relatively limited, although occasional site attendance will be necessary when commissioning or troubleshooting activities require additional technical support.
