Job Title: Director / Head of Project Commissioning – HVDC (Germany)
Location: Berlin, Germany (remote + travel)
Team Size: Current commissioning team 50+, expected to double over 2 years
About the Role: We are looking for an experienced and highly capable Director / Head of Project Commissioning to lead the German scope of a major HVDC portfolio. This is a critical, highvisibility role within one of Europe’s flagship energy projects, spanning land-based converter stations in Germany, offshore grid connections, and offshore platforms delivered in partnership with a consortium. Commissioning is central to the success of this portfolio, and this role is on the same level as the Project Director in terms of project impact. You will be responsible for leading the commissioning management team and the wider commissioning organisation.
Key Responsibilities
• To act on the same level as a Project Director • To have the flexibility and freedom to establish new commissioning processes, structures, and procedures, working closely with upper management to create a long-term footprint for the department and projects.
• Lead and manage the overall commissioning function across the entire portfolio, leading a large team of commissioning managers.
• Build, structure, and scale the commissioning organisation from the ground up, currently 50 heads with plans to double over the next two years.
• Act as the primary point of contact with customers for commissioning sequences, ensuring clear, credible, and structured communication throughout the project lifecycle.
• Establish governance, reporting structures, and operational standards for commissioning.
• Ensure commissioning plans are executed safely, on schedule, and in accordance with project requirements.
Candidate Profile
• Strong leadership and organisational skills, with experience leading large technical teams.
• Solid understanding of commissioning principles; deep technical HVDC expertise is not required, but familiarity with HVDC concepts and offshore/onshore projects is highly advantageous. • Experience in building teams, processes, or organisations from scratch.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to interact confidently with both internal teams and external clients.
• Proven track record of managing complex projects and delivering results in highstakes environments.
