Their niche is in end-to-end grid solutions for utilities and transmission operators, particularly:

  • High-voltage AC transmission substations (132kV up to 400kV+)

The role: A highly senior engineering authority role within the organisation, responsible for providing independent technical governance and assurance across all primary plant and substation design activities for major transmission and infrastructure projects. The Principal Plant Technical Authority acts as the ultimate engineering custodian for primary system integrity, ensuring all substation designs are safe, compliant, buildable, operable, and maintainable, while fully meeting client, regulatory, and organisational standards


Key Responsibilitie

  • Provide independent verification and approval of high-voltage substation primary plant designs, including AIS/GIS layouts, switchgear, transformers, and associated plant systems
  • Define and enforce engineering standards, technical requirements, and design governance across all projects
  • Lead design assurance reviews and establish key design hold points for formal technical sign-off.
  • Identify, challenge, and resolve critical technical risks, design non-conformances, and interface issues across disciplines.
  • Ensure full alignment of designs with construction methodology, operational requirements, maintenance access, and lifecycle performance
  • Act as the highest-level technical escalation point for primary plant engineering decisions within the organisation
  • Provide expert guidance and mentoring to senior and lead engineers across the business
  • Support continuous improvement of design processes, technical standards, and engineering quality frameworks


Your profile

  • 10+ years in high-voltage substation engineering
  • Proven background in primary plant / substation design
  • Experience across AIS and GIS substations
  • Exposure to 132kV–400kV+ transmission systems
  • Track record in major utility or T&D projects (EPC or OEM)

132kV Senior Authorised Persons – Asset replacement – Long Term Contracts – Outside IR35 – North of England – ASAP StartHunter Philips are partnered with one of the UK’s leading utilities who are seeking experienced 132kV Senior Authorised Persons to support a range of substation and new connection projects across the North of England.Responsibilities:Safely manage and oversee all HV operations associated with asset replacement works across the 132kV network.Prepare, issue and manage safety documentation and permits in full compliance with DNO and client procedures.Execute HV switching operations and coordinate with the control room to safely isolate, replace and re-energise network assets.Develop and implement switching schedules for planned asset replacement works, outages and return-to-service activities.Establish and maintain Safety from the System throughout the removal and installation of HV equipment.Lead and supervise the replacement, testing and commissioning of 132kV switchgear, transformers and associated plant.Coordinate the safe decommissioning and removal of existing assets, ensuring replacement equipment is successfully integrated into the network.Develop and review RAMS for high-risk asset replacement activities, including lifting operations, isolations, testing and commissioning.Ensure network integrity and operational safety are maintained throughout each phase of the replacement programme.Maintain clear and consistent communication with engineering, construction, commissioning and control teams.Requirements:Authorised at 132kV under one of the UK DNOs or National Grid.Proven HV switching experience on 132kV systems.Strong background in substations or grid connection works.Based in or willing to work across the North of EnglandFull UK driving license.Logistics:Monday to Friday (occasional optional weekend work).All inclusive day rate, outside IR35Long term contracts with an ongoing pipeline of major projects.Immediate start available.In order to be successful you must have previous authorisations under one of the DNOs up to 132kV.
