400kV Commissioning Engineer - Scottish Borders, Scotland - £Excellent Day Rate - 6 Month Rolling Contract - Outside IR35 - July Start - Monday to Friday (10 hour days) + Potential Weekend Work


I’m currently supporting a major UK Power T&D contractor, delivering a critical 400kV substation reinforcement project in the Scottish Borders region.


This is a key infrastructure scheme supporting the ongoing reinforcement of the UK’s high-voltage transmission network and enabling increased renewable energy capacity across the system.


Key Details:

  • Location: Scottish Borders, Scotland, UK
  • Start Date: Earliest beginning of July, latest end of July
  • Contract Duration: 6 months rolling contract
  • Hours: Monday to Friday (10-hour days), with potential weekend work depending on programme requirements
  • Requirements: 275kV / 400kV substation commissioning experience (Valid SPEN authorisations are not required)
  • Additional: Outside IR35


Responsibilities:

  • Carrying out commissioning activities on 275kV / 400kV substation plant and associated HV equipment
  • Executing switching programmes, functional testing, and commissioning procedures in line with project requirements
  • Testing and commissioning of primary and secondary systems including Circuit breakers, Isolators & disconnectors, Current & voltage transformers (CTs / VTs) & Protection and control systems
  • Assisting with pre-commissioning, energisation, and post-energisation activities
  • Supporting outage planning and coordination with project stakeholders and system operators
  • Ensuring all commissioning documentation, test sheets, and reports are completed accurately and in line with compliance standards
  • Working closely with project engineers, design teams, and site management to ensure safe delivery of works
  • Maintaining strict adherence to HV safety rules, switching procedures, and permit-to-work systems
  • Identifying and resolving technical issues during commissioning phases in collaboration with the wider engineering team


Requirements:

  • Proven experience in 275kV / 400kV substation commissioning within UK transmission networks
  • Valid SPEN authorisations are NOT required
  • Strong background in HV / EHV substation environments (SPEN, SSEN, National Grid or equivalent desirable)
  • Experience with primary plant and/or secondary systems commissioning
  • Competence in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and protection/control drawings
  • Solid understanding of commissioning procedures, safety rules, and switching operations in HV environments
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams on site
